Complete a Career Test or Self-Assessment

While there is no test that can determine your perfect career, there are many career assessment tools that provide starting points for further research based on individual personality types.

The Keirsey Temperament Sorter is a free online tool where you may determine your temperament style and related occupations according to psychologist, Dr. David Keirsey.

This career assessment tool is correlated with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), which is considered by many to be the “gold standard” in career assessments. If you are specifically interested in taking the MBTI, many trained and certified professionals in the GTA administer and interpret this test on a fee-for-service basis.

Alternatively, the Jung Typology Test is a free online tool based on Carl Jung and Isabel Briggs Myers’s typological approach and will provide you with a best estimate of your MBTI type. While using this version is not as valuable as participating in full MBTI testing with a professional, it's free and can help you by suggesting some areas for further career exploration.

While the York University Career Centre does not administer formal career tests/assessments, our career counsellors are qualified to interpret a battery of career assessment materials. If you take a free online career assessment, you may bring the results to a career counsellor for discussion. To speak with a career counsellor, please register for a career counselling appointment.

Career Exploration Workbook [PDF - 2.5 mb] or interactive, online Career Exploration Guide: Do you want to take a more in-depth look at yourself and what you have to offer? This self-assessment tool, developed at the Career Centre, contains a variety of exercises to help you identify your personal characteristics and type, interests, abilities, skills, values and curiosities. Complete your self-assessment using a PDF version of the workbook or complete the interactive online guide. Need help completing the exercises or interpreting your results?
