Wondering what you can do with your Sociology degree? Want to meet York Alumni and other Sociology graduates currently enjoying exciting careers?
During this networking event Sociology graduates will share their personal stories, how their career paths took them from graduation to where they are now, what knowledge, skills and experience helped them succeed in their jobs and what types of opportunities are available for students. The alumni will begin by introducing themselves which will be followed by “Speed Networking” where students will have an opportunity to ask the alumni their own questions.

I am a determined, motivated and resourceful young social worker with several years of field experience in the social service sector and community health sector. I possess a wealth of knowledge in client service provision and have assisted many clients and their families in crisis situations. I have also ensured that my overall goal when working with clients it to promote their well-being through effective assessment, liaison, crisis intervention, counselling, and advocacy.
I obtained graduate degree from University of Toronto's Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and I am a registered social worker. I utilize a solution-focused clinical and a community-based practice model, offering both therapeutic counselling support and effective case management support to children, youth, adults, seniors and families of diverse backgrounds.
I practice with a harm reduction, anti-oppressive and strength-based approach that is culturally sensitive and trauma informed. My therapeutic skills sets display combined elements of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), family systems and narrative-based techniques.

When I chose Sociology as my major I knew that one of the possible career opportunities was being a publicist. After I finished the program, I made the decision to attend college, Seneca@York, to strengthen my hard skills in communications. That program culminated with a leap of faith with an unpaid internship and it kickstarted my career in the music industry. 3 years later, I'm continuing to grow professionally and work with artists/partners domestically.

I provide professional consultation/empowerment strategy to communities, schools, governments, groups, teams, corporations and non-profits. I manage various aspects of change in pro social development and advancement.
I am known for being a speaker, trainer and innovative social subject matter expert.
Talisha Ramsaroop
Community Projects Coordinator, York University

9 years ago I started my undergraduate degree in Sociology at York University, with a specialization in Anti-Racist Research and Practise. Since then, I’ve used my lived experience and academic learnings to pursue a career in community building. With over 8 years of experience including as a project manager for a grassroots youth agency, and as a community planner for Social Planning Toronto, I now work at York University as the Community Projects Coordinator in the TD-Community Engagement centre.
I am committed to fostering meaningful community relationships, providing capacity building opportunities and establishing spaces for marginalized populations to claim space and create impact. I’ve consulted on projects with the TDSB, Springboard, YouthRex, and many other grassroots community groups to establish best practices for community building.
In 2015 I was awarded the Sir Lincoln Alexander Community Award for eliminating racial discrimination, which was presented by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario as well as the 100th North York Citation and the Urban Hero Award. I always knew that at some point in my life, I wanted to be an entrepreneur. The idea of controlling my own journey is something that has always appealed to me. Being the key decision maker, and having the ability to learn from my decisions, whether right or wrong, is something that I always valued. The entrepreneurial journey has been an incredible experience for both Stephanie and I.
