Working Women Community Centre - On Your Mark Tutoring and Mentorship Program

On Your Mark Program provides one-to-one and small group tutoring for students of Portuguese and Spanish-speaking heritage in elementary and high school (grades 1 to 12). Program has been specifically geared to those who are struggling with literacy and numeracy standards for their grade level and attending special education support services. This program also addresses dropout prevention and encourages the pursuit of post-secondary education.

Volunteer Tutors will work closely with elementary and/or secondary students and will be responsible for providing educational assistance, guidance and mentoring to their students.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance (in English) with homework, assignments, and address areas of need outlined by the teacher referral on a weekly basis. Volunteers have the opportunity to specify the subject area of strength (Math, English, Science, French Basic, French Immersion)
  • Work in cooperation with Program Coordinator(s), school staff in the selected schools to develop a work plan that is best suited to students' needs.
  • Assist in regular reporting and tracking of students' progress, accomplishments, and areas of difficulty to Program Coordinator.
  • Maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards education and learning and be a positive role-model for your student.
  • Knowledge of Portuguese and/or Spanish is an asset but NOT necessary.
