Working Women Community Centre/ On Your Mark Academic Support Program

Coordinated by the Working Women Community Centre, the On Your Mark Academic Support Program provides one-to-one and small group tutoring for students of Portuguese and Spanish-speaking heritage in elementary and high school, and has been specifically geared to those who are struggling with literacy and numeracy standards for their grade level and attending special education support services. This program also addresses drop-out prevention and encourages the pursuit of post-secondary education.

Recruiting for: Volunteer Tutors and Volunteer Site Supervisor

Skills: For both volunteer positions: - Student or graduate of a secondary or post-secondary institution - Excellent communication skills in English: Majority of tutoring sessions are to help students who are below grade level in reading and writing. (Knowledge of Portuguese and/or Spanish is an asset but NOT mandatory). - Ability and interest in helping students in all or some areas of reading, writing and math (Volunteers have the opportunity to specify the subject areas they prefer to teach.) - Interest in the field of education and/or social services. - Some experience working with children and/or youth at the elementary and/or high school level is an asset.

Education, English language, English literature, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, Teaching Strategies for English Language Learners
