Career Conversations with Criminology Alumni

Date: Friday November 8th, 2019
Time: 2:30pm-4:30pm
Location: Senate Chambers N940 Ross Building

Want to meet York Alumni and other professionals who graduated with a Criminology degree and are now in roles they love? Interested to learn more about their career journey, current roles and how they are using their degrees?

Connect with professionals currently enjoying careers in a variety of settings and get the inside scoop on what it's really like to work in these fields. During this panel professionals will share their personal stories about breaking into their field, how their career paths took them from graduation to where they are now, what knowledge, skills and experience helped them succeed in their jobs and what types of opportunities are available in their field. The panel will be moderated by one of the Career Centre's team members and followed by an open forum where students will have an opportunity to ask the panelists their own questions.

Registration is required. You may register for this event on the Experience York (you will be able to sign in using your Passport York and register for appointments and events on the system).

The only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to help people. After some time in finance I got a foot in to social services and have gone from the front lines of justice and social assistance to working on public policy and public sector innovation. Now, I get to help people on at the systems level and try my best to be the voice of dissent against business as usual when it comes to complex community issues.

I wanted to be a lawyer since I was a little girl. Every decision I made during high school and my undergraduate career was geared towards achieving this goal. The planning ended there! I've learned so much about the importance of being lucky, finding people to champion for you, and being honest about your priorities when thinking about you need from your career. I'm grateful for where those lessons have taken me.

Law and Order, C.S.I. and Criminal Minds greatly influenced my decision to study Criminology - like many others, I was fascinated by crime. Throughout my degree, I began to understand
that crime, criminals and the criminal justice system are not as they appear on television and decided to seek a career path that would target the root causes of crime.
