Alex Fanourgiakis
Manager, Cyber Security Policies and Standards, Ministry of Government and Consumer Services
Alumnus: BAS Information Technology / Administrative Studies, 2006

After graduating from York, I decided to follow my passion for penetration testing and cyber security full time in 2006. I worked for a large organization for 4 years learning the ins and outs of office politics, structure, code of conduct, and received formal training in various Cyber Security Disciplines.

After, I decided to pursue the exciting and fast paced environment of professional services. I joined up with medium Cyber Security company performing Penetration Testing, Vulnerability Assessments, PCI Audits, and Threat Risk Assessments for 2 years. After the incredibly jet setting lifestyle, I decided to make my own mark and set out on my own.

For the following 6 years, I formed the most important professional relationships, partnership and contacts. Acting as all roles regarding seeking, selling, performing, reporting, and maintaining various accounts. Those 6 years provided me with the vast experience in dealing with various organization sizes, technology, needs and expectations.

One of those contracts and relationships manifested itself to the current role I am in now as the Manager of Cyber Security Policies and Standards for the Government of Ontario. in this roles, my team and I perform industry research, gap analysis, modernization of old and the creation of new Corporate Cyber Security Policies and Standards.

I lead a multi-disciplinary team of highly skilled Cyber Security Professionals who not only have vast experience in their fields but are also heavily connected in the Cyber Security industry. We create and promote Policies and Standards, whitepapers and technical documents to ensure that information and systems are protected and safeguarded accordingly to their various levels of sensitivity.

Thing that made the biggest difference:
1 - Integrity... the Cyber Security industry talks. Always maintain your relationships.
2 - Continuously evolve your skill set (whether it is interpersonal or technical), challenge yourself.
3 - Passion! You must be passionate about your discipline and be able to convey this passion by bridging both the business and technical worlds together.
